Imphal/Churachandpur: A gunfight broke out late Wednesday night in Bishnupur distirct after suspected Kuki militants opened fire at an Indian Army post in a periphery village in the district bordering Churachandpur.Manipur Police on Thursday said suspected armed Kuki militants opened fire, ‘directing their fire towards an Indian Army post in Phougakchao Awang Leikai’, at 11.40pm on Wednesday.“The Indian Army and the Central Reserve Police Force (58th Battalion), deployed in the area, responded swiftly by returning fire towards the source, resulting in an exchange that lasted approximately 30 minutes,” police said. No casualties were reported.Security forces launched a joint search operation in the adjoining hill ranges, involving the Army, CRPF, Manipur Police and India Reserve Battalion (IRB). Officials said surveillance has been intensified and troops strategically deployed to prevent escalation. Civilians have been urged to remain calm and avoid spreading rumours.The incident took place after unrest in Churachandpur when a mine-protected Army vehicle collided with a two-wheeler, injuring two riders. Though both were evacuated and discharged after treatment, mobs vandalised property and torched a security vehicle at Tuibong. Police later detained 30 people in connection with the violence.
