Chandigarh: The BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Monday targeted the AAP govt over the alleged suicide attempt by a man outside the Sangrur DC office, with both parties linking the incident to the drug menace in the district.

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney alleged that Jagseer Singh of Namol village consumed poison after claiming he was threatened and assaulted for objecting to the alleged sale of drugs near his home. Sahney also alleged that police took CCTV evidence from the man’s house.“A citizen who raises his voice against the drug trade is pushed to the brink of taking such a desperate step. This is not merely about one individual. It is about whether an ordinary Punjabi can raise his voice against drugs without fear. Punjab needs a govt that protects those who fight the drug menace, breaks the entire supply chain and restores the rule of law,” Sahney said in a post on X.SAD functionary and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia also targeted the state govt, alleging that the drug menace had pushed several people in Sangrur to desperation. Referring to recent cases involving Mohanjit Sheron and Gulzar Singh, Majithia said the latest incident showed that people were continuing to seek help over the issue.“In Sangrur, Mohanjit Sheron raised his voice against drugs, Gulzar consumed poison, and now Jagseer allegedly consumed a poisonous substance, hoping to awaken the Guru Dokhi govt from its deep slumber,” Majithia said in a post on X.He alleged that Jagseer had pleaded for help but was ignored by officials. He also accused the Punjab govt of failing to curb drugs and protecting drug traffickers.The BJP and SAD statements came a day after Jagseer allegedly consumed a suspected poisonous substance outside the Sangrur district administrative complex. He claimed to have been harassed by the Namol village sarpanch and his associates after posting a video alleging illicit drug trade near his home.Police have registered an FIR against the sarpanch and seven others, including four unidentified persons, over alleged assault and house trespass. A detailed inquiry into the incident is underway.
