Jagraon: A mob of motorcycle-borne “miscreants” unleashed a wave of terror in the Kukkad Chowk market on Tuesday night, pelting shops with stones and bricks in an unprovoked attack that left at least two people injured.Witnesses described a “riot-like situation” as 15-odd masked men arrived on motorcycles, hurling projectiles that shattered storefronts and sent terrified shoppers and traders scrambling for cover. The sudden violence forced many shopkeepers to pull down their shutters, effectively paralyzing the commercial hub. One man and his uncle were injured in the volley of stones; witnesses reported that one of the victims collapsed on the road after being struck by a brick before being rushed to a nearby hospital.‘Resentment’ among tradersThe aftermath left the market roads strewn with bricks and glass, fueling anger among the local business community. Kamal Kumar, who owns a dupatta shop targeted in the attack, said the audacity of the group has left traders feeling vulnerable. “The incident has triggered widespread panic,” a local source said. “There is a deep sense of resentment among traders who are demanding immediate and stern action to prevent Jagraon from descending into lawlessness.”Police ResponseJagraon City police have launched a formal probe after a video of the incident surfaced on social media. While the motive for the attack remains unclear, investigators believe they are closing in on the perpetrators. Inspector Parminder Singh has confirmed that several youths involved in the violence have already been identified via CCTV and mobile-phone footage.Special teams are currently conducting raids to apprehend the suspects, who remain at large. The SHO stated that “strict legal action” would be taken to serve as a deterrent against future hooliganism.
