Pune: The state govt’s urban development department (UDD) has sanctioned a special grant of Rs 10 crore to the Alandi Municipal Council (AMC) to restore civic infrastructure damaged by the recent flooding of Indrayani river and strengthen essential facilities for the lakhs of pilgrims who visit the temple town.“The grant will be used to repair flood-damaged public infrastructure, including the drinking water supply network, roads, electricity distribution system, bridges and safety railings along Indrayani river. The funds will also be utilised to improve drainage and sanitation systems that were severely affected during the floods,” Madhav Khandekar, chief officer of the AMC, told TOI.Officials said the financial assistance is intended to expedite the restoration of civic services in Alandi, one of Maharashtra’s most important pilgrimage centres, where flood damage has disrupted daily life for both residents and devotees.

AMC has begun planning the restoration work and said priority will be given to repairing critical public infrastructure and ensuring uninterrupted civic services before the next influx of pilgrims.“The sanctioned funds will enable the municipal council to immediately begin repairing the damaged civic infrastructure and restoring essential services. The objective is to ensure that both local residents and visiting devotees do not face any hardship,” Khandekar added.Residents have urged the authorities to complete the work without delay, stating that several damaged stretches continue to inconvenience commuters.“The state government has sanctioned the funds at the right time. Now the focus should be on speedy execution. The old bridge, which has remained closed to vehicular traffic since the floods, should be repaired and reopened at the earliest. Its closure has led to severe traffic congestion on alternate routes every day,” said Sachin More, a resident of Alandi.“Thousands of devotees visit Alandi throughout the year. The damaged roads, drainage system and other civic amenities should be restored before the next festive rush. The authorities must ensure the work is completed within a fixed timeline so that residents and pilgrims are not inconvenienced again,” another resident, Vaishali Jadhav, said.
