Bengaluru: Plans to launch cruise tourism services from Mangaluru have moved a step closer, with Waterways Leisure Tourism Ltd agreeing in principle to examine the feasibility of operating cruises from the coastal city following discussions with the Karnataka tourism department.The understanding was reached during a meeting in Mumbai between senior tourism department officials led by secretary V Ram Prasath Manohar and representatives of the cruise operator, including president and CEO Jurgen Bailom and associate director (port operations) Bharat Acharya.As the next step, the company’s technical team will visit Mangaluru next month to assess port infrastructure, tourism potential, operational feasibility and support facilities required for cruise operations. Discussions also focused on infrastructure needs, market opportunities and passenger demand. The company recommended a detailed evaluation of the region’s commercial viability and a dedicated strategy to position Mangaluru as a cruise tourism destination.The development comes amid the state govt’s efforts to build a cruise tourism ecosystem along Karnataka’s coastline. Recently, tourism department officials visited the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal to study its passenger facilities, terminal management systems and operational framework. Following the visit, the department initiated a preliminary feasibility study for developing an international-standard cruise terminal in Mangaluru.“Karnataka’s coastline offers immense potential for cruise tourism. The govt is committed to develop this sector by engaging with leading industry players and creating the necessary infrastructure and ecosystem. This initiative will not only strengthen coastal tourism but also generate employment opportunities and attract investments to the region,” tourism minister KJ George said.
