A complex surgery to remove an adrenal tumour from a 32-year-old woman was successfully performed at SRN Hospital on Friday.

Prayagraj: Doctors at Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital successfully performed a complex surgery to remove an adrenal tumour from a 32-year-old woman on Friday. The procedure involved removing and repairing a portion of the inferior vena cava (IVC), the body’s largest vein, to separate the tumour that had become attached to it.The patient, Sudha Devi, a resident of Meja, was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) after the surgery and is under close observation. She had been suffering from pain on the right side of her abdomen and significant weight loss for nearly a year. Investigations conducted at the urology department of SRN Hospital revealed a tumour in her right adrenal gland. Further tests were carried out to assess the possibility of pheochromocytoma, a type of adrenal tumour that can produce excess hormones.SRN Hospital media in-charge Dr Santosh Kumar Singh said the operation was performed under the leadership of Dr Dilip Chaurasia, head and professor of the urology department. Dr Shreesh Mishra and Dr Gajendra Singh were part of the surgical team. The anaesthesia team was led by Dr Dharmendra Yadav, associate professor in the anaesthesia department, and included Dr Archi Singh and Dr Manisha Tiwari.During the open surgery, doctors found that the tumour was firmly attached to the IVC, making its removal particularly challenging. The affected portion of the vein was removed along with the tumour and subsequently repaired.Dr Chaurasia said the tumour’s attachment to the IVC was the biggest challenge during the procedure. However, coordinated efforts by the surgical and anaesthesia teams ensured the successful completion of the operation. The adrenal glands are small hormone-producing organs located above the kidneys. They regulate several vital functions, including blood pressure, metabolism and the body’s response to stress. While not all adrenal tumours are cancerous, some can produce excess hormones. Pheochromocytoma, for instance, may cause high blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, headaches and excessive sweating.
