Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has approved a series of industry oriented and multidisciplinary courses as part of its implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Among the key decisions was the approval of a new 44 credit foundational programme, advanced course in digital humanities and archiving, under the faculty of humanities.

Vice-chancellor Suresh Gosavi said, “The course has been designed to train students in using digital technologies for preserving and researching India’s cultural and historical heritage.”

The management council also approved seven foundational and advanced courses under the departments of mechanical and material technology.

An university official said, “These include programmes in drone piloting, electric vehicle (EV) repairing, CAD CAM 3D design, CNC and VMC operations, and industrial robotics. The courses are intended to equip students with skills that match the changing requirements of industry and improve their employability.”

In another move under NEP, the university approved new degree designations for autonomous BTech and non autonomous BE colleges.

Students will now be able to pursue multidisciplinary minor, double minors, honors and honors with research pathways, giving them greater flexibility to build interdisciplinary academic profiles.

This would encourage industry relevant, skill based and research driven education while providing students with opportunities to learn emerging technologies and adapt to evolving workplace demands, Gosavi added.

In engineering education, the council approved the fourth year curriculum for the BE in advanced communication technology programme. It also cleared the revised curriculum for the postgraduate mechanical engineering (EV technology) programme.
