Kanpur: Samajwadi Party MLA Hasan Roomi on Thursday staged a dharna inside an 18-foot-deep pit caused by a road cave-in on VIP Road in Jajmau area of Kanpur.Roomi, who represents the Cantt Assembly constituency, reached the site in the afternoon and entered the pit using a ladder.SP workers and residents gathered at the spot and officials reached the site after being informed about his visit. The MLA remained inside the pit despite rain during the protest.The cave-in, about five metres wide, occurred after rain lashed the city on Tuesday and Wednesday.“This is serious negligence. Departments responsible for road construction and maintenance have not taken any action”, Roomi said questioning the quality of road.He demanded action against the officials concerned and the executing agency if negligence was established. He said that public safety should not be compromised. Officials inspected the site and assured appropriate action.
