Chennai: A 30-year-old software engineer died and two others sustained injuries when their car crashed into iron rods protruding from a truck ahead of them on Adyar River bridge at Manapakkam in the early hours of Sunday.The deceased was identified as Malapati Ashok, 30, a native of Andhra Pradesh, who resided in Ramapuram and worked at an IT company in Pallavaram. Police said Ashok was returning home after completing his night shift at about 2am in the company’s car.Govindaraj of Old Pallavaram was at the wheel, and Ashok’s colleague Sri Soumya was also travelling in the same vehicle. While the car was crossing Adyar River bridge at Manapakkam, it rammed into a truck transporting iron rods for metro rail work. Investigators said the rods extended nearly 10ft beyond the rear of the truck and pierced through the car’s front windscreen. All three sustained serious injuries.Local residents shifted them to a private hospital in Manapakkam. Ashok died despite treatment, while Govindaraj and Sri Soumya continue to receive medical care.St Thomas Mount Traffic Investigation Wing registered a case against the truck driver, Sivakumar Bindu, and arrested him. He was produced before a magistrate court and remanded in judicial custody. Further investigation is underway.
