Nagpur: A smart public toilet on Walkers Street in Civil Lines, which had remained shut for the past 10 days, reopened on Saturday evening after the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) intervened following multiple complaints. The civic body has also initiated action against the contractor responsible for maintaining the facility and is set to issue a show-cause notice for the lapse.Corporator Abhijeet Jha, who raised the issue with the administration, demanded strict action against the contractor, alleging negligence in maintaining the public amenity. He also urged the NMC commissioner to order a comprehensive audit of all smart toilets in the city to ensure they are functional and properly maintained. The contractor is responsible for the maintenance, repair and cleaning of 25 of Nagpur’s 37 smart public toilets, constructed by the civic body at a cost of several crores. Under the agreement, the firm is required to undertake regular cleaning, timely repairs, technical upkeep and ensure uninterrupted public access. However, complaints of unhygienic conditions, technical faults and prolonged closures have repeatedly surfaced in recent months, raising concerns over the quality of maintenance despite the substantial public investment in the facilities.
