Dibrugarh: Flood-ravaged schools across Sivasagar may remain closed longer, as thousands of students face an uncertain return to the classroom. The district administration has sought a 10-day extension of the summer vacation for flood-hit schools, citing safety concerns.Nearly 500 schools and more than 70,000 students have been affected. Inspector of schools Samiran Bora has asked the directorates of secondary and elementary education to let affected schools reopen on Aug 10 instead of Aug 1.“Our priority is to ensure that students are not made to return to classrooms that remain unsafe or unfit for use. Many of these schools need time to recover from the damage caused by the floods before they can safely reopen,” Bora said.Officials said the additional time would allow schools to clean up, repair infrastructure and restore basic facilities. Unaffected schools will reopen on Aug 1, regardless of whether the proposal is approved.
