Mangaluru: While the state govt has approved a Shramik Residential School for each district, the land was quickly approved in Puttur, granting the residential school for children of labourers in Puttur. The opportunity to approve it only at the district centre exists; it was approved for the taluk centre only in Puttur, said Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai.The Shramik Residential School building will be constructed in Kuriya at a cost of Rs 37.6 crore by the Karnataka State Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, he said.“The residential school has been approved with the intention of providing quality education to the children of poor workers so that they can progress in society. Admission is only available to children of workers with a worker’s identity card. Therefore, those who are workers should obtain a labour card from labour department. Typically, schools from grades 6-12 are only spread over a maximum area of 10,000 sq feet, but the labour school is being constructed over an area of 71,000 sq feet. Information about the facilities of the school should be provided to the workers so that they can enrol their children in the school,” Rai said. He added the foundation stone laying ceremony for the school has been held already.“The school building will be inaugurated in the next 18 months. Admission of children will take place before the elections. All subject teachers will be present in the residential school for children of labourers. Teachers will reside on the premises. The new school building, including boys’ and girls’ hostels and teachers’ quarters, will be constructed on seven-and-half acres,” the MLA said.
