Shillong: Union home minister Amit Shah on Saturday cancelled his proposed two-day visit to Shillong from Sunday, citing “unavoidable circumstances”.Shah was scheduled to present President’s Police Colour to the Meghalaya Police on Oct 5 at JN Stadium.“It is hereby informed that the President’s Colour Presentation Ceremony for Meghalaya Police scheduled to be held on Monday Oct 5, 2026 at JN Stadium, Shillong stands cancelled due to unavoidable circumstances,” Meghalaya Police said in a statement.A fresh date is expected to be announced later for handing over medals to eligible police personnel.Shah was also expected to meet Meghalaya BJP leaders during the visit, days after the party’s strength in the 60-member assembly rose from two to 10 with eight of 12 United Democratic Party (UDP) MLAs joining the BJP on Sept 23.The switch, led by education minister Lahkmen Rymbui, has made BJP the second-largest party in the House, behind the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).NPP, led by chief minister Conrad K Sangma, has 33 MLAs, two above the majority mark. UDP has been reduced to four MLAs.BJP is part of the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) and previously had two MLAs—AL Hek and Sanbor Shullai—both from Shillong urban seats. Both have alternated holding cabinet portfolios in the MDA govt.
