Rs 1,667 cr expansion to enhance passenger handling capacity: Director
Srinagar, June 15: Srinagar International Airport is handling nearly 4.4 million passengers annually, significantly exceeding its designed capacity of 2.5 million passengers, airport authorities said on Monday.
With these figures, the growing passenger traffic seems to have put considerable pressure on the airport’s existing infrastructure and facilities.
However, the airport director, Javed Anjum said that they have been handling the passengers efficiently.
“At present, the Airport building has a 2.5 million passenger capacity, but we are handling 4.4 million passengers from this building. With this capacity, we are doing a good job by providing all the facilities and are managing the way to ensure there is no congestion,” he said.
Replying to a query during the press briefing, Anjum said that the Rs 1,667 crore expansion project will significantly enhance the passenger handling capacity at the airport.
The Director further said that the number of airports across the country has increased above 150, thus simultaneously leading to an increase in connectivity. “On this day, we have highlighted the success stories,” he added.
Pertinently, 16 activities were held throughout the day as the Srinagar International Airport celebrated Yatri Suvidha Diwas with zeal and enthusiasm.
As per an official communique, the celebrations commenced with the rendition of “Vande Mataram”, followed by a Plantation drive conducted in the esteemed presence of Deputy Commissioner, Budgam, SSP, Budgam, and other dignitaries.
Passengers and visitors enthusiastically participated in various attractions, including vibrant Cultural performances in the Arrival Hall, an engaging Selfie point featuring government initiatives on development, and “Paint Your Ideas” canvas stations, where passengers showcased their artistic talents through paintings and sketches.
A cleanliness drive was organised to promote awareness about maintaining a clean environment. Health check-up camps for stakeholders and passengers, along with a Blood donation camp, were also conducted within the terminal premises.
Interactive quiz sessions added to the festive atmosphere, with winners receiving prizes for their participation. The occasion also recognised the invaluable contributions of the women workforce and other staff members whose dedication ensures the smooth functioning of airport operations.
A special highlight of the day was the visit of students from neighbouring schools, including specially-abled children, who were given an opportunity to experience and learn about the airport environment. The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, making the celebration both memorable and inspiring for all participants.
