Lucknow: The department of paediatric surgical superspecialities at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) secured major national recognition at IAPSCON 2026 in Bengaluru, with its faculty and resident doctors winning multiple prestigious awards for clinical innovation and research, an official spokesperson said on Sunday.Department head Basant Kumar was conferred the ‘National Leadership Award 2026 in Paediatric Surgery’ for his contributions to clinical care, teaching and academic leadership, while Ankur Mandelia bagged two first prizes for scientific papers evaluating nephropathy after porto-systemic shunt surgery in children with extrahepatic portal venous obstruction (EHPVO) and the safety of intraoperative enteroscopy in paediatric cases.The department’s resident doctors also achieved top honours. (Lt Col) Rahul Goyal received the ‘UC Chakraborty Gold Medal for Best Research Paper 2026’ for his work assessing splenic shear-wave elastography in portal hypertension.MCh residents Shuchi Varshney and Anand Kumar Maurya won first prizes for studies on paediatric extragonadal germ cell tumours and infant hindgut duplications, respectively. Pooja Prajapati secured two second prizes for research on liver fibrosis biomarkers in biliary atresia and rare pancreatic tumours.
