Lucknow: The Supreme Court (SC) has granted bail to a resident of Lucknow who was convicted in a 2015 murder case after he spent nearly 13 years in custody.Kamlesh Kumar was convicted by a trial court in 2018 under section 302 of the IPC for the murder of his wife, Rajpati, and was sentenced to life imprisonment along with a fine. The incident occurred on the night of Mar 27-28, 2015, at their residence under Mal police station in Lucknow, where the victim was found with multiple stab injuries.Police investigation later named Kamlesh as the accused. His conviction was upheld by the Allahabad high court in Mar 2025. The matter reached the apex court through a special leave petition.A double bench of Justice MM Sundresh and Justice N Kotiswar Singh, while hearing the plea, granted bail, noting that the accused had already undergone prolonged incarceration and that the case involved arguable legal issues.Shivam Gupta, Kamlesh’s lawyer, told TOI that the court ordered suspension of the sentence during the pendency of the appeal, granting interim relief to the accused. “The acquittal will be heard in coming days,” said Gupta.
