Sanitation workers stage sit-in outside JMC headquarters Friday

Jaipur: Ten sanitation workers began an indefinite hunger strike outside the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) headquarters at Lal Kothi Friday, demanding resolution of long-pending issues related to sanitation worker recruitment. The protest was organised by the Sanyukt Valmiki Evam Safai Shramik Sangh, which alleged that assurances given during earlier negotiations have not been implemented. The union is demanding priority in recruitment for families traditionally engaged in sanitation work, appointment of candidates involved in recruitment-related court cases, and preference for both serving and former sanitation workers in the recruitment process. The union has also sought classification of newly recruited sanitation workers as semi-skilled during the first year, skilled during the second year, and permanent employees after completing two years of service.Union president Nandkishor Dandoriya said the decision to launch the hunger strike was taken after repeated demands failed to receive a response from the authorities. Several social and community representatives extended support to the protest during the day.The union warned that if its demands are not addressed, the agitation could be intensified in the coming days.
