Panaji: Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) on Tuesday temporarily suspended the acceptance of municipal solid waste (MSW) from two municipal councils and six village panchayats at the Saligao solid waste management facility for 25 days due to maintenance work. The facility will continue to process 100 tonnes per day (TPD), down from its usual capacity of 150 TPD. In a letter, GWMC informed Mapusa and Mormugao municipal councils and the village panchayats of Chimbel, Santa Cruz, Corlim, Curca, Old Goa and Merces that waste from these local bodies would not be accepted during this period. However, the facility will continue to accept waste from coastal village panchayats and those located around the plant.“It is hereby informed that the Saligao SWMF is presently facing major maintenance requirements along with certain unforeseen operational conditions, which have affected the normal functioning and processing capacity of the facility. In view of the prevailing circumstances, it has become necessary to temporarily regulate the receipt of waste at the facility to ensure safe and effective operation of the plant and to avoid any further operational complications or damage to the equipment,” GWMC managing director Harish Adconkar said.He said the corporation was constrained to suspend waste acceptance from the eight local bodies with immediate effect from Oct 10 for 25 days, during which maintenance work and corrective measures would be undertaken to restore normal operations.“You are therefore requested to make suitable alternative arrangements for the management and processing of the waste generated within your jurisdiction during this period, so as to ensure that there is no accumulation, uncontrolled disposal or littering of waste,” Adconkar said.GWMC will issue further instructions on the resumption of waste acceptance at the facility after the maintenance work is completed and normal operations are restored, he said.
