Guwahati: Floods submerged Janmoni Konwar’s home but failed to drown her dream; now, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has stepped in to support her training.The assistance comes days after the 17-year-old Jorhat karateka won gold at the 20th All India Independence Cup Karate Championship 2026 on Aug 9.Janmoni’s participation was uncertain after the July 19 floods submerged her home at No. 2 Sonari Mojiabheti Bhogdoiporiya village. PhysicsWallah CEO Alakh Pandey arranged her flight tickets and accommodation in Delhi. Pandey has been distributing relief materials in flood-hit areas of Jorhat, Sivasagar and Charaideo since July 30.After learning about Janmoni’s struggle and sporting achievements through media reports, SAI Regional Centre, Guwahati, executive director DK Mittal contacted her family, coach, district sports officer and other officials on Thursday.“She was offered a proposal to join SAI Training Centre (STC), Shillong, under SAI Regional Centre, Guwahati, where the Karate discipline is available. Janmoni’s family and coach have expressed their willingness to join SAI STC, Shillong, and avail herself of the support and facilities available under the SAI STC scheme,” he added.Under the scheme, Janmoni will receive training, boarding and lodging, financial assistance, support for competition-related expenses, insurance coverage and other benefits.Mittal said Jorhat district commissioner assured all possible assistance to Janmoni and her family.Currently undergoing treatment at Jorhat Medical College, Janmoni is expected to join the SAI centre in Shillong shortly, where she will continue her training and pursue her sporting aspirations with greater support, facilities and opportunities.She won gold and bronze at national karate championships in 2025 and 2024, respectively.Assam boxer Lovlina Borgohain was spotted by Janmoni’s coach, Padum Boro, during an SAI talent hunt in Golaghat district in 2013.
