Nagpur: As dusk settled over the city, Holi fires lit up at street corners and housing societies, drawing families in shared tradition. The ceremonial Holika Dahan, observed across neighbourhoods on Monday, marked the triumph of good over evil and ushered in the vibrant celebrations of Holi set to unfold on Tuesday. From residential lanes to bustling public squares, Holika Dahan was held with traditional fervour across the city. In many housing societies and family clusters, ceremonies began as early as late morning and continued throughout the day, while larger community celebrations unfolded in the evening at open grounds and street corners, drawing sizable gatherings. One such Holika Dahan, with a long history, was organised at Sitabuldi main road. Women performed puja and offered coconut and ‘gaathis’ before the Holi was lit up. Similar celebrations were held in different parts of the city. “We prefer performing the ritual in the afternoon with close family members,” said Anjali Deshpande, a resident of Pratap Nagar. “It feels more personal and peaceful. In the evening, we usually step out to meet friends and neighbours for the social gathering of Holika Dahan,” she said.Street corners that glowed with Holi fire on Monday evening are set for a splash of colours on Tuesday. Vendors said they are geared up for an early morning customer rush, having stacked up packets of gulal, water balloons, and pichkaris. “Even though we want to celebrate with our families, Holi morning brings good business for us. So, we keep the shop open till around noon on Rangpanchami,” said Raju Varma, a vendor.
