Patna: The Bihar govt on Thursday appointed senior advocate Satya Darshi Sanjay as the new advocate general of the state, succeeding P K Shahi, who stepped down from the constitutional post on June 14.Sanjay, who is currently serving as Additional Solicitor General (ASG) of India in the Supreme Court, assumed charge as advocate general on Thursday at the old AG office building in Patna high court.Shahi had been appointed advocate general for a second term on Jan 16, 2024.Born into a middle-class family, Sanjay studied at Sir Ganesh Dutt Pataliputra High School in Patna before completing his graduation in commerce from Vanijya Mahavidyalaya, Patna University. He later pursued legal studies at the Campus Law Centre of Delhi University.After enrolling as an advocate, he trained under senior advocate Gopi Chand Bharuka, who later became a judge of Patna high court. Over the years, Sanjay built expertise in civil, constitutional and criminal law, while developing a strong practice in corporate and contractual matters.Following the reorganisation of Bihar and Jharkhand, he represented several companies before the Jharkhand high court and the Supreme Court. He later served as additional advocate general for the Bihar govt and went on to become the first Additional Solicitor General from Patna high court.As ASG, Sanjay assisted the Patna high court in several cases, including matters related to land acquisition for the Rajgir Ordnance Factory and litigation linked to the reconstruction of Mahatma Gandhi Setu.Recognising his legal acumen and professional contributions, the Centre appointed him ASG on Sept 11, 2024.Members of the Bar, including senior advocates from the Supreme Court, and the Delhi, Jharkhand, Calcutta and Patna high courts, congratulated Sanjay on assuming his new constitutional role.
