Prayagraj: As soaring temperatures continue to drive up electricity consumption across the state, the govt has initiated a series of measures to ensure uninterrupted and reliable power supply. Efforts are being undertaken to strengthen the power infrastructure, improve the efficiency of the transmission network and enhance overall supply capacity to meet the growing demand during the peak summer season.Currently, electricity is being supplied for 24 hours in urban areas, while rural areas are receiving an average of 22 to 22.5 hours of supply — exceeding the scheduled roster. To further improve power supply in the rural areas of Prayagraj, the govt is undertaking the construction of new power lines and the installation of transformers.Ashok Kumar, Chief Engineer (Zone II) of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam said that the project involves constructing six new 33 kV lines in rural areas and upgrading the capacity of nine 33/11 kV substations. Additionally, 158 new transformers will be installed, and the capacity of 584 existing transformers will be increased across the regions beyond the Ganga and Yamuna rivers.Despite the intense heat and surging demand, the gap between demand and supply in urban areas is negligible, and the situation in rural areas is also favorable.Kumar said that 245 million units of electricity were supplied to the district’s rural areas in May, with a peak demand of 360 MW. To further minimize the supply-demand gap, the govt has approved a Rs 41 crore project, and work on it has already commenced. In view of the rising electricity demand, the govt has prioritized utilizing the maximum capacity of generation units and ensuring technical efficiency and robust maintenance across all plants.Concurrently, the power distribution system is being made more accountable and consumer-centric in line with govt directives, feeder-wise accountability is being established. No negligence will be tolerated at any level regarding transformer failures, feeder disruptions, or the resolution of complaints.
