T’puram: The Union govt has funded Rs 7 crore to build a multi-purpose berth and wharf at Kollam port.The port is being developed for logistics, warehousing, tourism and other work. With Vizhinjam port getting more exim cargo, small port development is crucial for the state.The state govt has accorded in-principle approval for development of the port under public-private partnership.Under the Sagarmala Programme, the ministry of ports, shipping and waterways has partially funded the project for development of the multipurpose berth with financial assistance of Rs 7.24 crore to construct 101m long and 21m wide wharf and other ancillary facilities. The total project cost is Rs 15.15 crore.Development of Kollam Port is expected to attract investments in port operations, logistics, warehousing, tourism and allied maritime activities, thereby generating employment opportunities, said a written reply presented in Lok Sabha by minister of ports Sarbananda Sonowal to a question by N K Premachandran MP.The state govt is working to create a detailed project report on models best suited to the specific requirements and potential of the port. The development of Kollam alongside Vizhinjam International Seaport, is expected to significantly enhance the state’s infrastructure and create new employment opportunities.The project is also anticipated to strengthen cargo movement by improving connectivity between other ports.The move is to leverage the strengths of port networks and expand maritime connectivity.
