Bengaluru: Food Safety and Drug Administration’s drug wing Tuesday seized spurious drugs worth Rs 5 crore from an establishment near Bidadi toll gate.The offenders were repackaging spurious drugs and affixing labels of multinational pharmaceutical companies before selling them to retail pharmacies. They were allegedly using “sticker remover sprays” to remove existing labels and replacing them with those of reputed drug companies, officials said.

“The suspects were buying spurious drugs for as low as Rs 600-700 and selling them for 10 times more — Rs 6,000-7,000. They had labels of all big pharmaceutical companies, including international ones like Pfizer,” said FDA commissioner Srinivas K.“We are yet to figure out where they were buying the spurious drugs from. Our next course of action will be be to raid that godown,” an offiical said.The dept will also trace the retailers to whom the mislabeled drugs were sold and, if possible, track down buyers who may have unknowingly purchased the fake medicines. Officials said the establishment was functioning without a valid licence.
