Guwahati: In order to modernise Guwahati’s urban infrastructure, enhance public safety and improve the city’s aesthetics, the state Budget presented in the Assam Assembly on Friday for 2026-27 announced a Rs 2,500 crore project to shift the city’s overhead electricity distribution network to an underground cable system in a phased manner. The finance minister said the ambitious project is aimed at creating a safer, more reliable and visually appealing power distribution network while reducing disruptions caused by overhead electric lines. The first phase of the project will be implemented with an investment of Rs 200 crore under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). It will cover five key stretches across the city that witness heavy traffic and commercial activity. The proposed corridors include Paltan Bazar Square, AT Road from Paltan Bazar to Bharalumukh, MG Road from Bharalumukh to Padumphukhuri, GS Road from Paltan Bazar to GMCH Road, including GMCH Road, and GS Road from Bhangagarh to the Dispur Secretariat.According to the govt, the underground cabling project will significantly improve the reliability of power supply, reduce the risk of accidents associated with overhead wires, and enhance the overall urban landscape. The initiative forms part of the govt’s broader strategy to upgrade Guwahati’s civic infrastructure and develop the city into a modern, resilient and future-ready urban centre.
