Coimbatore: Corporation councillors have voiced concern over the disruption of routine work of the civic body as its officials were constantly tied up in special intensive revision (SIR), assembly election works since December, and now the upcoming population census work.Even after the completion of the state assembly elections, corporation officials have not been able to fully resume pending work, as they are now engaged in training and preparatory activities for the national census.AIADMK councillor R Prabhakaran said the repeated deployment of corporation staff for SIR, election, and census work has created an additional burden.Prabhakaran said, “Every routine work, including solid waste management, has been affected. If they repeatedly deploy corporation officials for other works, then who will look after the ward works?”He pointed out that the corporation is already reeling under staff shortages, and frequent reassignment affects service delivery, monitoring of ongoing projects, and timely response to public grievances.Expressing a similar concern, ward 26 councillor Chithra Vellingiri said, “None of the assistant engineers is available in their office and is reluctant to meet the councillors, citing repeated meetings.”Despite the contract being awarded for relaying roads and construction of new stormwater drains before the election, it has not been executed yet, he added. The corporation should complete all the sanctioned projects and those announced in the corporation budget. Meanwhile, the monthly council meeting is also being delayed despite the formation of the new government. No efforts have been made to conduct the zonal meeting or prepare the estimates for other necessary proposals, he said.
