Dibrugarh: In a move to curb traffic violations and enhance public safety, the Sivasagar district transport office has temporarily suspended 20 driving licences following an enforcement drive.The crackdown was part of the National Road Safety Month, observed from Jan 1 to Jan 31, 2026, which saw heightened surveillance across various picnic spots and strategic locations under different police station jurisdictions throughout the district.
The stringent action aligns with the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court and the Motor Vehicles Act, 2019. According to official data, the suspensions targeted high-risk behaviours that contribute to road fatalities. Specifically, eight licences were suspended for drink driving, while another eight were revoked due to the overloading of goods trucks. Furthermore, four riders saw their licences suspended for failing to wear helmets. All affected licences have been invalidated for three months to serve as a deterrent against future negligence.These developments were brought to light during the district road safety committee meeting held at the conference hall of the district commissioner’s office in Sivasagar on Wednesday. The session was presided over by district commissioner Mridul Yadav, who emphasised a “Vision Zero” approach, aiming for a future with zero road-related fatalities and injuries in the district.Addressing the stakeholders, district commissioner Mridul Yadav said, “Our primary objective is to instil a sense of responsibility among commuters. Road safety is not merely a statutory requirement but a collective moral obligation to protect human lives. We will continue to take stern action against those who jeopardise public safety by flouting traffic norms.”The committee conducted an analysis of accident rates and causal factors from the preceding month. A portion of the discussion focused on infrastructure, particularly the identification of “black spots” — sections of roads prone to frequent accidents — and the immediate implementation of corrective engineering measures. Every govt department involved as a stakeholder was urged to fulfil its specific duties with renewed vigour to ensure a holistic safety net.The high-level meeting saw the participation of additional superintendent of police Moidul Islam, co-district commissioner of Nazira, Pratibha Meshram, additional district commissioner Suntrisna Ghorphalia, assistant commissioners Chandana Jahnabi and Ganesh Chandra Boro and member secretary of the road safety committee, Prakash Pegu, alongside other senior departmental officials.
