Nagpur: MahaMetro on Thursday barricaded the road between Freedom Park Metro Station (Morris College T-Point) and Institute of Science College (DP Road) for construction of a tunnel which will stretch till Manas Chowk. The road closure, along with ongoing concretisation of Wardha Road, is likely to increase pressure on the stretch near Zero Mile which is already witnessing heavy traffic flow. Foundation for the 870-metre-long tunnel, stretching from Manas Chowk to the Institute of Science via Freedom Park Metro Station, was laid on Oct 14, 2024. A PIL regarding the project is pending filed before the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court. The traffic branch of Nagpur police on Wednesday announced traffic diversions in view of construction of the tunnel. The notification will remain in force from June 4, 2026, to July 3, 2026. As per traffic police, the work will be carried out by M/s YFC & BBG Projects and is expected to continue for a year.In view of heavy vehicular movement, traffic regulation and control measures have been introduced to prevent congestion and avoid accidents during the construction period.Under the diversion plan, traffic from Freedom Park Metro Station (Morris College T-Point) towards Institute of Science College will be diverted via Variety Square and Maharajbagh Square. Alternatively, motorists can take a left turn from Zero Mile and proceed through Forest Office Road to reach Institute of Science Square.Vehicles moving from Institute of Science College towards Freedom Park Metro Station will be diverted through Maharajbagh Square and Variety Square. Another alternative route has been provided via Board Office Square, Forest Office Road and Zero Mile for reaching Morris College Square.DCP (Traffic) Aditya Mirkhelkar appealed to motorists to follow the diversion routes and cooperate with the traffic police to avoid inconvenience during the period.
