Prayagraj: There seems to be no respite for citizens living in low-lying areas of city with twin rivers – Ganga and Yamuna – recording rise in its water table.Although both the rivers are flowing four meters below danger mark, residents are looking for possible options if the siminlar situation continues in next 48 hours.The local administration on its part have interacted with residents and cautioned them for safety and security measures in case of flood water enters in residential low lying areas.If the flood water enters in low lying areas in days to come, it would surely affected thousands of families staying in Chota Baghara, Baghara,Ganga Nagar, Beli gaon, Rajapur, Newada, Mehdauri, Chilla, Salori, Govindpur, Daraganj, Sadiabad, Bakshi Moda and adjoining areas.Residents, however, admitted that they have too adopted ‘wait and watch’ method to take any action. Officials of the flood control department attributed the rise in the water level to release of additional rain water by many dams in states like Madhya Pradesh, and Uttrakhand.The district authorities have already sounded an alert and activated as many as 98 flood outposts. By 8 am , water level of both the rivers at all the three recording sites was rising.Water level of Ganga (at 8 am ) at Phaphamau was 80.73 m, at Chhatnag it was 79.97 m. Yamuna was flowing at 80.32 m at Naini, four meters below the danger mark of 84.73 m. There has been an increase of 39 cm in water level of Yamuna river in 24 hours at Naini. Similarly, Ganga rose 16 cm and 43 cm at Phaphamau and Chhatnag respectively.At 4 pm, the water level of Yamuna at Naini was recorded at 80.51 metres. Similarly, the water level of Ganga at Phaphamau and Chhatnag stood 80.81 and 80.11 meters.A senior district official said, “We are maintaining a close watch on water level and measures are being initiated accordingly. At present, there is no need to panic as water level is increasing in slow pace and both the rivers are flowing below four meters of danger point”. He, however, said, “If more flood water is released into Ganga and Yamuna, we would be taking prompt actions and shifting people living in low lying areas to safer places”.Areas like Rajapur, Beli Gaon, Baghara, Chota Baghara and adjoining areas are under scanner.
