Ludhiana: The Punjab State Human Rights Commission has issued a show-cause notice to the municipal commissioner following a “seemingly intentional” failure to report on fatal accidents caused by the city’s crumbling roads. The commission’s intervention follows a complaint by activist Rohit Sabharwal, who has alleged that potholes have turned death traps and the recent death of a local lawyer near Jagraon Bridge is an evidence. The lawyer reportedly lost control of his vehicle on a broken road.Despite a formal request for information on July 10, 2025, the civic body failed to provide road-safety and accident-rate data. In its latest order, the commission characterised the silence as a deliberate flouting of authority and demanded the commissioner explain why penal action should not be recommended for non-compliance.The civic body must submit a report before the next hearing on May 18. The case highlights mounting public anger over bureaucratic negligence as crumbling secondary roads continue to endanger motorcyclists and other commuters across the industrial hub.
