Shillong: The Ri-Bhoi district police force has busted a gang of inter-state ATM thieves, active across the country, and arrested six accused in connection with an ATM theft case that occurred two years ago in the district, the state police department said on Thursday.Following an incident of theft or break-in that occurred at Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd at Bhoirymbong branch in Ri-Bhoi district on April 5, the police swung into action and registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) with the Umiam Police Station.“Initially, the case had very limited leads. Looking at the seriousness of the issue and the possibility of involvement of inter-state elements, a special team was constituted by superintendent of police, Ri-Bhoi, led by additional SP (crime) and other police officers of the district under the close supervision of the DIG (Eastern Range), Shillong,” a police statement said.“In this coordinated operation, Meghalaya Police with the assistance of Assam Police, Haryana Police busted an organised gang linked to ATM cash theft cases across the country and in Ri-Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills, North Garo Hills districts of Meghalaya, which are more recent,” the police said.
