Chennai: The anti-corruption branch of CBI registered a disproportionate assets case against a retired chief commissioner of income tax, Chennai, and his wife.IRS officer N Rengaraj acquired ₹1.82 crore worth of assets between 2010 and 2024 through unknown sources of income.CBI had initiated the investigation based on a complaint that Rengaraj amassed wealth when serving as a principal commissioner of income tax in Coimbatore between 2021 and 2024. It was confirmed that Rengaraj and his wife, Uma Maheswari, purchased property in Trichy, Coimbatore and Pudukottai. “Apart from building two palatial houses in Coimbatore and a farmhouse in Trichy, the couple also bought luxury cars,” said the FIR. The couple also had high-value fixed deposits and balances in different banks.After preliminary verification, CBI wrote to state and Centre to investigate and registered an FIR.A 1991-batch IRS officer, Rengaraj served in different capacities before retiring as the chief commissioner of income tax, Chennai, last year. His wife, Uma Maheswari, is the daughter of S M Raju, who was elected as an ADMK MLA in Tamil Nadu Assembly in 1977-81.
