Kanpur: A 67-year-old retired sub-inspector of the police department’s Local Intelligence Unit (LIU) died after allegedly shooting himself in the neck with his licenced single-barrel gun at his home in the PD Nagar locality under Sadar Kotwali in Unnao on Sunday night. Police said the incident was linked to prolonged illness and mental stress.The retired SI, Ranjit Singh, was rushed to the district hospital in a critical condition by his son, Abhishek. Doctors referred him to Kanpur, where he died during treatment at a private hospital.Abhishek told police that his father had been suffering from several serious ailments and had been undergoing treatment. Owing to persistent physical pain and illness, he had been under mental distress for quite some time.According to Abhishek, only he and his father were at home on Sunday. His wife and children were at their house in Lucknow, while his mother had died earlier. He said that around 11 pm, after dinner, his father went to his room and later shot himself in the throat with his licenced gun. Hearing the gunshot, Abhishek rushed to the room and found his father lying in a pool of blood.After receiving information, Sadar Kotwal Chandrakant Mishra, the Sadar Chowki in-charge and a forensic team reached the spot. Police said blood was scattered across the room’s floor and the gun was found nearby. The forensic team collected fingerprints and other evidence from the scene, and police took the licensed firearm into custody.Inspector Chandrakant Mishra of Sadar Kotwali said Investigation and legal proceedings are being carried out on the basis of information provided by the family.
