New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has invited universities and higher educational institutions to recommend eminent educationists for the Padma Awards 2027, asking them to submit nominations to the Commission by July 22.
In a public notice issued on Wednesday, the UGC said the nominations are being sought following a communication from the Ministry of Education regarding the country’s highest civilian honours.
The Commission has requested institutions to identify individuals with distinguished contributions to higher education, research, innovation and other areas of academic excellence and submit their recommendations in the prescribed format within the stipulated deadline.
According to the notice, universities should email their recommendations to the UGC at secretary.ugc@nic.in by July 22, 2026, enabling the Commission to forward the nominations to the Ministry of Education for consideration.
The UGC has also advised institutions to ensure that the nominations are complete in all respects and accompanied by the prescribed citation and supporting documents.
The Padma Awards—Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri—are among India’s highest civilian honours and are announced every year on the occasion of Republic Day. The awards recognise distinguished and exceptional service across various fields, including literature and education, science and engineering, medicine, sports, social work, public affairs and trade and industry.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has already opened nominations for the Padma Awards 2027 through the Rashtriya Puraskar Portal, with the last date for online nominations being July 31, 2026. The government has encouraged citizens to submit nominations, including self-nominations, as part of its ‘People’s Padma’ initiative.
