Bhubaneswar: The state commission for women (SCW) on Friday sought an inquiry report within 15 days from Bhubaneswar DCP Saravana Vivek M on the alleged rape of a 26-year-old woman by an armed stranger inside her house on Wednesday. The survivor alleged that an unidentified man had barged into her home and sexually assaulted her at gunpoint.“This is a shocking incident. The govt is alert and committed to ensuring that the guilty person is punished. The police are trying their best to trace and arrest the accused. The investigation is moving on the right track,” said SCW member Urmila Mohapatra, who, along with her team, met the investigating team and reviewed the progress of the probe. They also met the survivor and assured her of justice.Police said the suspect was identified, though he remained absconding. “He stole a bike while fleeing. He first boarded a bus, then an autorickshaw before riding the stolen bike. Four teams are searching for him,” a police officer said. While the survivor, who works with an IT firm, reiterated that she did not know him, police said it would be ascertained after his arrest whether they had any prior acquaintance.Meanwhile, opposition BJD and Congress members also met senior police officers and raised concerns about women’s safety, besides criticising the police over what they alleged were inadequate security measures.
