Ranchi: At a time when conversations around fitness are growing louder, open gyms in public parks are emerging as important community spaces offering free, accessible workout options for residents of all age groups. Designed to promote physical activity in natural surroundings, these installations are meant to encourage daily movement, social interaction and preventive health.Fitness experts say open gyms can play a vital role, especially for beginners and senior citizens. “Light resistance machines, cross trainers and stretch bars in parks are excellent for improving mobility, joint flexibility and cardiovascular health. For many people who cannot afford private gyms, open gyms are a practical starting point,” said Jamshedpur-based fitness trainer Rahul Dev.Regular users also point to the social aspect. Morning and evening walkers often combine their stroll with light workouts, creating informal fitness communities. “We meet daily, exercise together and motivate each other. It keeps us active and socially connected,” said Seema Prasad, who frequents the open gym at Sardar Patel Park in Harmu, Ranchi. However, visitors across several parks in Ranchi, especially near Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium, Oxygen Park (overseen by the forest department), Krishna Singh Park in Doranda, Children’s Park in Morabadi and Sardar Patel Park say that maintenance remains uneven.“Some machines are in good condition, but a few need repair or repainting. If regular checks are done, more people will use them confidently,” said college student Ritesh Kumar at the Morabadi site.At Oxygen Park, joggers say the natural ambience overlooking the greenery makes it an ideal spot for stretching and light strength exercises, but certain machines need tightening and repainting. “Two of the cross trainers wobble slightly and the arm rotation equipment has rust near the handles. The location is beautiful and peaceful. With timely repairs, regular oiling of joints and better cleanliness around the gym area, it can truly become a model open fitness facility,” said, open gym visitor, Neha Verma.
