Ranchi: The grieving parents of six-year-old Shubham Munda turned their irreparable loss into a gift of sight for two strangers, exemplifying a rare gesture of humanity and compassion. Shubham was undergoing treatment for a brain tumour at Rims and passed away on Feb 13.“Shubham was suffering from a headache for the last two months. We consulted with many doctors in Ranchi, where he was treated and got temporary relief. But on Feb 9, his condition worsened, and he stopped responding. We took him to a private hospital, but they referred him to Rims. After an MRI test, it was revealed that he had a brain tumour. Although Shubham was operated on Feb 10, he could not survive and left us on Feb 13,” Shubham’s mother, Dolly Kumari, told TOI on Tuesday. After his death, counsellors at the Rims eye bank counselled Dolly and her husband, Sujit, a driver by profession, to donate Shubham’s corneas so that someone else could get the opportunity to see the world. Both parents agreed and gave their consent for donation.“We will always regret that we could not save our child. But we are happy that Shubham’s eyes could light up someone else’s life,” Dolly said. With Shubham’s donated corneas, two visually impaired people – a 28-year-old man from Palamu district and a 40-year-old woman from East Singhbhum district – got a new lease of life.Abhimanyu Kumar, manager at the Rims eye bank, said that Shubham is their youngest-ever cornea donor since the establishment of the bank in 2018.Abhimanyu Kumar, manager at the Rims eye bank, said that Shubham is their youngest-ever cornea donor since the establishment of the bank in 2018
