Kanpur: A silver craftsman from Rajasthan has claimed ownership of a bag containing 10 kg of silver worth Rs 24 lakh that was recovered by police outside Geeta Temple in Kanpur.Police, however, have asked the man to produce relevant documents to support his claim. He has told the police that he will arrive with the papers on Monday.According to information, an unclaimed bag and two cartons were found lying on the premises of Geeta Temple on Sunday.After receiving information, police reached the spot, opened the bag and cartons and found nine silver bars in the bag. The cartons contained a floor-mopping machine and a few other items.A few hours later, an advocate representing a silver craftsman from Rajasthan reached Pheelkhana police station and claimed that the bag belonged to his client.The advocate said the craftsman used to take silver from Kanpur to Rajasthan, where he got Rajasthani jewellery made, and then supplied it to customers in Kanpur. He added that on Friday, the craftsman was travelling from Kanpur to Rajasthan with silver, accompanied by an associate, and they were carrying seven bags.While loading the goods into a car parked near Geeta Temple, one bag and two cartons were allegedly left behind on the temple premises, he said. They realised that one bag was missing only after reaching Rajasthan, the advocate claimed.Pheelkhana inspector Abhay Kumar Singh said the claimant had been asked to furnish bills related to the purchase and sale of the silver along with other supporting documents.“On Monday, the silver craftsman will present the documents before ACP Kotwali Amit Kumar Pandey,” Singh said.Further action will be taken after verification of the documents, police said.
