Kolkata: An intense spell of rain pounded pockets of the city on Friday early morning. Triggered by a low pressure area, localities in north and central Kolkata received less rain than southern pockets. The Alipore Met office recorded a 44.3 mm of rain between 5.30 am on Thursday and 5.30 am on Friday. While this system is likely to continue causing heavy rain in parts of neighbouring Odisha, Met officials said the city would get only light to moderate rain. “We can expect further reduction in rainfall activity by Saturday in the city. But we will continue to receive sporadic rain,” said HR Biswas, head at Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata.Pockets in southern parts of the city logged 40 mm and above rain, mostly during the early hours of the day.Northern localities logged rain count ranging between 20 mm to 25 mm. Met officials said this uneven rain distribution was because of the distance of the low pressure area from the city. “Even as there will be no major system affecting the rain pattern in the next few days, local heating amid moisture incursion can cause thunderstorm, which in turn can cause thundershowers,” added Biswas.
