Kanpur: A sudden spell of rain accompanied by a hailstorm lashed Kanpur on Saturday, bringing much-needed relief from the heat. Earlier in the day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted light showers in isolated pockets. Weather conditions began shifting around 4 pm as clouds gathered and light drizzle set in, which later intensified into moderate rainfall and hailstorm around 6:30 pm.According to weather expert Sunil Pandey, the city recorded 3.3 mm rainfall during the spell, while the maximum wind speed reached 37.3 km per hour. Besides, Company Bagh recorded 6.1mm rainfall, Kaka Deo 5.9mm, Civil Lines 6.2mm and Naubasta 6.4mm. The rainfall brought significant respite from the prevailing heat conditions. The city had recorded a maximum daytime temperature of around 36°C, which dropped sharply to nearly 30°C after the rain. The minimum temperature is also expected to decline during the night due to the changing weather pattern.Sunil Pandey attributed the sudden weather shift to an active western disturbance affecting the region. He further predicted that cloudy skies and light drizzle are likely to persist on April 5. He also predicted similar weather conditions, including light rain and hailstorm activity, may continue over the next few days. The district administration has appealed to people to remain alert, avoid taking shelter under trees during storms, and follow safety precautions in view of the unpredictable weather conditions.
