GORAKHPUR: A sudden spell of rain on Wednesday led to a sharp drop of nearly 8-10 degrees Celsius in temperature across Gorakhpur, significantly altering weather conditions and affecting daily life.Light rainfall since morning brought down temperatures, making the weather noticeably cooler. While residents stepped out with umbrellas, schoolchildren were seen heading to classes drenched in the rain. The unseasonal showers, accompanied by strong winds, have adversely impacted agriculture, especially in rural areas. Standing crops, particularly wheat, have reportedly suffered damage due to rain and gusty winds flattening fields.ADM (finance and revenue) and in charge of disaster management, Vineet Kumar Singh, said a survey is being conducted to assess crop losses. “Farmers whose crops are ready should harvest and store them safely. Compensation will be provided after verification of damage,” he said.According to meteorologist Dr Sushant Gupta, similar weather conditions are likely to persist through Thursday. “Eastern UP, including Gorakhpur, is witnessing rainfall along with winds blowing at speeds of around 40 kmph, which is maintaining the cool conditions,” he said.Experts attribute the sudden change to a western disturbance active over northwestern hilly regions, coupled with a cyclonic circulation at an altitude of around 5,000 feet over eastern UP. These factors led to cloud formation and rainfall. The weather is expected to improve from Friday onwards, with conditions gradually returning to normal.
