New Delhi: As part of its ongoing repair drive across city flyovers, Public Works Department (PWD) has begun maintenance work at Andrews Ganj flyover to fix missing or damaged handrails and boundary walls. A key connector in south Delhi, Andrews Ganj flyover eases traffic between Lajpat Nagar, Defence Colony and the Inner Ring Road. It handles heavy commuter volume daily and helps bypass congested intersections below, making it crucial to one of the capital’s busiest corridors. PWD has allocated Rs 79.5 lakh for the project, which will also involve installing precast concrete Jersey barriers to enhance safety along the stretch. The move follows the department’s announcement of a broader overhaul of the Barapullah flyover, where missing handrails and the need for height barriers at entry points were flagged. Officials said the work is part of a larger effort to address wear and tear across Delhi’s flyover network. With nearly 100 flyovers across the capital and at least 17 identified for repairs after inspections last year, concerns over ageing infrastructure have been rising. A recent ground check at several sites showed visible deterioration. At Nehru Place Flyover, cracks on the surface, rattling expansion joints and broken noise barriers pointed to years of heavy use. At Modi Mill flyover, the asphalt surface showed blistering, while potholes and uneven patches were noted near Zakhira and Sarai Rohilla flyovers. Experts say that although most flyovers continue to bear heavy traffic loads, maintenance gaps are becoming more evident. They stressed the need for a time-bound inspection system, repairs and stronger safety features to prevent minor damage from escalating into major risks.
