Mumbai: The Elphinstone Road overbridge demolition gathered pace after Western Railway successfully de-launched two 32m-long girders at Prabhadevi station during an overnight block. The operation, carried out between 1.30am and 6am, used an 800 MT crane and a large team of workers to remove key sections of the old bridge safely. WR chief spokesperson Vineet Abhishek said: “About two weeks back, the first span of girder was removed. With this delaunching, the work on western portion of the ROB has been completed.”The block at Prabhadevi was part of the ongoing dismantling of the ageing structure, which is being cleared to make way for the 4.5-km double-decker Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector outside the railway corridor. Railway officials said the latest operation was completed successfully after an earlier attempt last Sunday was called off because of a mechanical failure in the heavy-lift crane. The project has already led to traffic snarls and disruptions for pedestrians and rail commuters in the busy Parel-Prabhadevi stretch, one of Mumbai’s most congested corridors. Authorities are working to minimise inconvenience while pushing ahead with the redevelopment.Sources said the new bridge and related works are expected to be completed before the end of the year, offering long-term relief and improved connectivity.
