Chandigarh: Punjab Youth Congress workers were stopped by police and several detained on Wednesday after they attempted to march from Punjab Congress Bhawan to the Punjab assembly in Chandigarh to protest alleged recruitment scams.Led by Indian Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib and Punjab Youth Congress president Shubham Sharma Shubhi, the protesters demanded the resignation of education minister Harjot Singh Bains. Police used water cannons to stop the march towards the assembly before detaining several protesters when they refused to disperse.Addressing the gathering, Chib alleged that the credibility of recruitment examinations had come under question during the AAP govt’s tenure and claimed Punjab had witnessed six major paper leak incidents. He alleged repeated examination leaks and recruitment scams had affected lakhs of job aspirants and accused the govt of attempting to suppress voices raising the issue.Shubhi alleged the govt had responded to the protest with police action instead of answering questions on the alleged recruitment scams. He described the use of water cannons and detentions as an attack on democratic rights and said such action would not deter the state’s youth from raising the issue.
