Puligundu’s 1,000-foot twin rock peaks near Chittoor to be developed for adventure, eco and temple tourism

A three-phase action plan is being drawn up to develop the tiny Puligundu village in Penumur mandal near Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh as an adventure, spiritual and eco-tourism destination.

The two imposing 1,000-foot rock peaks, natural geological formations, green cover and trekking routes give Puligundu immense tourism potential. The three-century-old hilltop Sri Puligundeshwara Swamy temple adds spiritual value, making the rock formations a rare blend of nature, adventure and devotion.

Tourism officials said the existing infrastructure and 79 acres earmarked by the government provided a strong base. The action plan includes optimal use of resources and better infrastructure to make Puligundu the district’s top destination.

District Collector Sumit Kumar, after a series of inspections at the spot, said that for adventure tourism, graded trekking trails, rock climbing and bouldering would be developed using natural rocks. “A zip-line and rope course between the two peaks will be explored. Safety equipment, trained local youth as guides, and regulated camping and night trekking are proposed,” he said.

“The eco-tourism plan includes a nature park with native species, eco-huts, wooden cottages, a butterfly garden and bird-watching zones. Viewpoints with shade, benches, rainwater harvesting, recharge pits and a plastic-free environment are planned,” the Collector said.

As part of temple tourism, beautification works, repair of steps and pathways, safety railings, improved lighting for pre-dawn and evening darshan, resting facilities, meditation spaces and signage would be taken up. Infrastructure planned includes a parking area, accommodation blocks, a reception and information centre, drinking water, toilets, cloakrooms, food courts promoting local cuisine, a first-aid centre, rescue facilities, waste management, solar lighting and digital information. Lighting in and around the spot would be taken up at a cost of ₹10 lakh.

The officials said safety would be given top priority. Strengthening steps and railings, warning boards, safety ropes, trained rescue teams, CCTV cameras and a police control room are on the agenda. “The three-phased action plan will generate local jobs, promote local food and handicrafts and bring state and national recognition to Puligundu,” a tourism official said.
