Coimbatore: Thousands of devotees thronged churches across the city on Sunday morning to celebrate Palm Sunday, marking the beginning of Holy Week for Christians. Churches in the city held special services, prayers, and took out processions to mark the occasion.Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus Christ’s arrival in Jerusalem as a king, riding a donkey. His disciples and the crowds welcomed him by waving palm leaves, symbolising the victory of good over evil.Churches across Coimbatore, including major ones such as St Michael’s Cathedral on Big Bazaar Street and CSI churches, held processions in which devotees carried blessed palm leaves commemorating Jesus Christ’s entry into Jerusalem. Churches in the city were adorned with decorative palm fronds in keeping with tradition.A Palm Sunday procession organised by the All Christian Churches Ecumenical in Podanur started from TELC Jesus My Redeemer Church, Podanur, around 7am on Sunday and proceeded to Mount Carmel Church in Carmel Nagar. The procession was led by D Ananthamuthu Kumar, president, Christian Churches Ecumenical, secretary Russel Raj, and treasurer S Kersom Jacob. More than 500 devotees took part in the procession.Similarly, a Palm Sunday peace march held by CSI Christ Church on Trichy Road in the city was led by church chairman Rajendra Kumar. More than 800 devotees participated in the procession, which started from the church campus, covered two kilometres on Trichy Road, and ended at the church campus.
