For Matt Ellis and Kate Tucker, buying a home in Melbourne became a familiar cycle of hope, bidding and disappointment. The couple wanted to remain close to their community and friends, but they were repeatedly outbid in the inner city market. Eventually, they looked far beyond Victoria and found a more affordable path near Cygnet in Tasmania. They bought 1.5 hectares of land for $330,000 in early 2019 and started planning an unusual home based on the Earthship movement. They began building in 2022 using recycled bottles, rammed earth and passive solar principles. Nearly three years later, their home was finished at a total cost of $880,000. As reported by ABC News, the project became a demanding family build supported by volunteers, workshops and a shared belief that a sustainable home could also be modern, comfortable and personal.Leaving Melbourne behindMatt and Kate had long imagined living in the countryside, but their first preference was to find a home in or near Melbourne. They wanted to stay connected to friends and the community they knew. The problem was the property market. Again and again, the couple found themselves competing against buyers with deeper pockets.For many families, being priced out of a city means making a difficult choice between location, space and affordability. Matt and Kate eventually decided that land offered more possibilities than a finished house. Rather than stretching their finances to buy a conventional property, they looked for somewhere they could build a home around their values.The answer came in Tasmania, just outside the town of Cygnet, about 40 minutes from Hobart. The 1.5 hectare property provided room for a home, gardens, a greenhouse and another planned residence for Matt’s father. At $330,000, the land cost far less than the properties they had been unable to secure in Melbourne.The move was not simply an escape from high prices. It gave the couple an opportunity to pursue a long held dream of designing an Earthship.What an Earthship isEarthships are homes designed to work with natural systems rather than rely entirely on conventional utilities. The movement began in New Mexico during the 1970s under architect Michael Reynolds. Earthship designs often use recycled materials, passive solar heating, water collection, food growing and systems for treating household waste.The approach is based on reducing dependence on external power, water and sewage networks. Thick walls help regulate indoor temperatures, while windows are positioned to capture winter sunlight and limit overheating. Greenhouses can provide food growing space and help warm the home.The concept has attracted people interested in sustainability, resilience and lower long term running costs. It has also remained relatively uncommon in Australia. According to the couple’s building designer, Martin Freney, only about 15 Earthships had been completed across the country at the time of the project.Traditional Earthships are often associated with curved forms, earth packed tyres and unusual, almost futuristic appearances. Matt and Kate wanted to use the principles without copying the look. Their home would have sharper lines and a contemporary appearance, while retaining the core ideas of passive heating, recycled materials and self sufficiency.Designing for TasmaniaThe couple’s design had to respond to Tasmania’s cooler climate. Earthship homes in New Mexico are built for a very different environment, with intense sun, hot days and cold nights. A direct copy would not have worked well on a Tasmanian site.Instead of using the traditional earth floor, the Cygnet home has a concrete foundation to avoid the chill associated with a ground level floor in a cool climate. The design also includes tubes within the foundation that transfer heat from the ground, helping maintain a more stable indoor temperature.The walls were planned as monolithic rammed earth structures. These walls act as thermal mass, absorbing warmth during the day and releasing it slowly as temperatures fall. The method reduces the need for conventional heating and cooling, although it does not eliminate the need for careful design and maintenance.North facing windows were positioned to make the most of available sunlight. Inside, the greenhouse became a defining feature, bringing natural light into the home and providing a space for growing plants. The greenhouse also creates a transition between the outside environment and the living areas.Recycled bottles become building materialsOne of the most recognisable features of the home is its use of recycled bottle bricks. Rather than sending empty bottles to landfill or relying entirely on new construction materials, the bottles were incorporated into sections of the building.Bottle bricks allow light to filter through walls and create colourful visual details. They also express the Earthship philosophy of turning waste into a resource. For the family, the bottles became part of the home’s identity, connecting the building to the wider community effort that helped construct it.Using recycled materials does not automatically make a building inexpensive. Materials must be collected, cleaned, prepared and installed safely. You may also need specialist advice and careful approval from local authorities for unusual methods of construction. Matt and Kate’s experience showed that sustainable materials can reduce waste and add character, but they still demand time, labour and planning.When the build fell behindThe original plan was ambitious. The couple expected both Earthship homes to take about 15 months to build, with a projected cost of roughly $600,000 per house. They believed the price would be comparable to a conventional custom home, but that the finished result would offer greater energy efficiency and lower operating costs.The project encountered problems almost immediately. The carpenter leading the construction became seriously ill, creating a major disruption. Weeks of rain slowed progress further. Timelines stretched, costs rose and the couple faced the pressure of continuing full time work while raising young children.Their lease on a nearby rental home was also running out, adding urgency to an already difficult project. The family needed a way to make the house liveable while construction continued.Instead of relying only on contractors, Matt and Kate turned to the wider Earthship community.Strangers help build a homeThe couple had previously attended Earthship workshops, where participants learned construction techniques while helping build experimental or private homes. They decided to host a similar event at their own property.Volunteers arrived for a week long workshop, bringing labour, enthusiasm and practical skills. They learned how to work with cob, make bricks and contribute to the construction. The couple provided food and accommodation, while participants gained experience with an unusual building method.The volunteer effort did more than speed up construction. The greenhouse is bright, peaceful and central to the family’s daily life.The home’s sustainable features include rammed earth walls, recycled bottle bricks, passive solar design and systems intended to reduce reliance on conventional heating and cooling. These features are part of a wider design rather than isolated decorations.Matt and Kate have said they do not regret leaving Melbourne or pursuing the project, despite the higher than expected cost and the stress of the build. The home represents more than an alternative construction method. It reflects the life they hoped to create when conventional housing became unaffordable.Work has continued on the second home planned for Matt’s father, with completion estimated for March 2026.A home that teaches its own lessonsThe Cygnet Earthship shows that sustainable housing is not necessarily a shortcut to cheap housing. Matt and Kate’s home was not built entirely by the couple or by a single contractor. It involved fear, financial pressure, illness, rain and exhaustion, but also friendship, learning and persistence.Choosing a different definition of successFor Matt and Kate, success was not simply building the cheapest possible house. Rising property prices have encouraged many people to consider smaller towns, regional land, owner building and unconventional materials. Not every project will suit every family, and building outside standard methods can involve significant risks. But the demand for homes that are affordable, efficient and environmentally responsible continues to grow.The Cygnet Earthship offers one possible response. It does not present a perfect formula, and its final cost was much higher than first expected. Yet it shows how people can combine technology, natural systems and community labour to create a home with a strong sense of place.When their son observed that hardly anyone else had a house like theirs, he captured the project’s most personal achievement. The building is unusual, but it is also recognisably theirs, shaped by their choices, their struggles and the people who helped bring it to life.
