Prayagraj: The detailed project report (DPR) for running a full-fledged metro rail network in Prayagraj has been prepared, bringing the proposed Rs 12,000-crore project a step closer to implementation. Railway technical consultancy firm RITES has submitted the fresh DPR to the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), and efforts are now underway to secure approval from the state govt.Once the state govt gives the go-ahead, the DPR will be forwarded to Centre for approval. The project can move towards implementation only after the central govt clears the proposal and funding arrangements are finalised. The latest DPR retains the two corridors proposed earlier for the city. The first corridor will connect Shantipuram with Chheoki in Naini, while the second will connect Jhunsi with the airport and the proposed Aerocity area.According to Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) vice-chairman Rishiraj, who is the nodal officer for the metro project, the Jhunsi-Bamrauli route has now been extended up to the airport in the fresh proposal. A ropeway station at Parade has also been incorporated at the junction of the two proposed metro routes. The proposal has undergone several changes over the past few years. Initially, a DPR was prepared for a full-fledged metro rail system in Prayagraj. Subsequently, on the state govt’s directions, RITES prepared a MetroLite DPR, with smaller stations and a lighter infrastructure model. However, following suggestions from UPMRC, RITES again conducted a survey last year to prepare a fresh DPR for a full-fledged metro system. The latest report has now been submitted to UPMRC.PDA officials said the project will require approval at both the state and central levels. After the state govt clears the Rs 12,000-crore proposal, it will be sent to Centre, which is expected to provide financial support for the metro project. The fresh DPR has thus revived the prospect of a full-fledged metro network connecting key residential, commercial, transport and airport-linked areas of Prayagraj.
