The man who posted a video purporting that Barbados Labour Party (BLP) candidate Wilfred Abrahams’ constituency office sent him cash in his election circular a week ago, was sentenced yesterday to 80 hours of community service.
At his first court appearance last week, Akeem Renaldo Durant, 27, of Breedy’s Land, Christ Church, admitted to Chief Magistrate Deidre McKenna that on February 9, he used a cellphone to send an electronic communication that was menacing in character and caused, or was reckless as to whether it would cause, annoyance, distress or anxiety to Abrahams, who contested the Christ Church East seat.
When the fisherman returned to the Oistins Magistrates’ Court yesterday morning, Abrahams, who retained the constituency in last Wednesday’s General Election, also addressed the court.
He said Durant came to his office and apologised to him.
“I accepted that the apology was genuine and was satisfied that no malice was intended; that there was a lapse of judgement and that someone else ran with (it) and caused mischief,” he said.
He then recommended that Durant be given community service so that he would not have a record, once that is completed successfully. (SD)
