Pune: Poona Merchants Chamber, a wholesalers’ body from Market Yard, has approached the civic administration and standing committee chairperson Shrinath Bhimale and demanded that the flyover project proposed in Market Yard and Nehru Road be expedited.Members of the body have raised serious concerns over frequent traffic jams in the entire area and urged the civic administration to consider their suggestions while finalising the flyover plan.Ishwar Nahar, secretary of Poona Merchants Chamber, said the main focus of the flyover project should be on streamlining the traffic. “Presently, the entire stretch from State Warehouse Corporation Chowk to Gangadham Chowk and Aai Mata Mandir Chowk has been facing traffic snarls almost every day,” he said.“We therefore wanted the flyover to begin from State Warehouse Corporation Chowk towards Aai Mata Mandir. This flyover should be constructed on a single-pillar design so that trucks and heavy vehicles travelling to Market Yard area would not face problems,” he added.The members also said they were expecting feedback from the civic authorities on their proposal and a meeting to discuss the plan before finalising the flyover’s design.Commuters in the area have said traffic chaos has increased significantly in the last few years, especially because of the rise in vehicular traffic towards Kondhwa from Market Yard-Gangadham Chowk. They said the flyover was necessary to provide direct access to the vehicles travelling towards Kondhwa and NIBM Road. It would reduce chaos in Market Yard, they said.In the last few months, the civic officials have made the flyover plan a priority. A series of meetings has been held, followed by several site visits.
